2012 Kids’ ArtPrize Tour: Stop #8

You can support reading and language development while you tour ArtPrize without creating anxiety for struggling readers. Here’s the next phase of our ArtPrize for Kids: Language Connections Guide for 2012. Thanks again to our friends at grkids.com for the work done on creating the Tour!

Here are picks from Stop #8 of the 2012 Kids’ ArtPrize Tour . For each, we’ve added some language prompts for building those neural pathways for all ages. Feel free to comment with your responses, a child’s response or additional questions – and ENJOY!

Some overall questions for this stop:

  • How are the exhibits at this stop alike?
  • How are the exhibits at this stop different?
  • How is this stop alike or different from the stops we’ve already visited?

Clown Fish 

  • What colors do you see?
  • What shapes do you see?
  • What other fish have we seen?
  • This is a clown fish. They live in the sea. What other animals can you think of that live in the sea?
  • How many actions words can we use to describe what this fish might do? The fish ___.
  • SH is a time when two letter make one sound. What other words can you think of that have sh in them?
  • Does this piece remind you of any stories you know?

Edge of the Forest

  • What words can you think of that rhyme with gnome?
  • What animals do you see?
  • Is there an animal that starts with the sound of s? The sound of r? How about a b sound?
  • What sounds do you think we’d hear if this was real?
  • What other pieces have we seen that had animals in their habitat?
  • What other pieces have been about a forest?
  • What do you think the forest gnome might be thinking about?
  • How would you describe his mood?
  • How old do you think he is?
  • What do you think his name should be?
  • Does this piece remind you of any stories you know?

Fantastic Carousel of Dreams 

  • How many syllables are in the word carousel? [3; care-uh-sell]
  • What animals do you see?
  • Which animals have two syllable names? Which have one? Do any have more than two?
  • How many animals are there?
  • How many are horses?
  • Where would these animals live in real life?
  • Which animals have we seen in other pieces? How were they the same? How were they different?
  • What describing words can you use to describe these colors?
  • How are these horses all the same? How are they different?
  • Where else have we seen a carousel?
  • Why couldn’t we ride this carousel?
  • Does this remind you of any stories you know or places you’ve visited?

Follow-up activities could include looking up information on how carousels work; researching clown fish; writing a story about the gnome visiting the other venues or ArtPrize pieces; describing one of the pieces to someone who wasn’t there with you.
